Electricity Retailers: Understanding Your Options
The options for buying electricity can be confusing. We’re here to help you make the right choice in energy suppliers. You can choose to purchase electricity through Alectra Utilities’ Regulated Price Plan (RPP) or through an electricity retailer.
Buying electricity from Alectra Utilities
Alectra Utilities does not earn a profit on the electricity we purchase on your behalf. You pay the same market cost for electricity that we do.
As our customer, you pay a regulated price per kilowatt hour (kWh) for the electricity you use. This price is set by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB). It remains the same over the summer and winter seasons.
Buying from an electricity retailer
Retailers buy large ‘blocks’ of wholesale electricity from power generators and then sell it to consumers. You then pay the retailer the ‘fixed-price per kilowatt hour’ that you agreed on when you signed the contract with the retailer. The price may be guaranteed for a specified number of years, but it can change during the contract period.
If you are approached to sign or renew an electricity contract for your home or small business, it’s important to know who you’re dealing with. Energy company salespeople must wear an ID badge and give you a business card.
Four things to remember if you are approached to sign an energy contract:
- Always make sure you get a business card and look at the salesperson’s ID badge first.
- Don’t share personal information (i.e. your electricity bill) unless you are sure you want to sign a contract.
- Carefully read the contract, disclosure statement and price comparison provided by the salesperson.
- Enersource does not go door to door and will not ask you to sign a contract.
Before you sign anything, shop around. Know your rights and options. You can get more information on energy retailers by visiting the Ontario Energy Board.
