Electricity retailers: understanding your options

The options for buying electricity can be confusing. We're here to help you make the right choice in energy suppliers. You can choose to purchase electricity through Enersource's Regulated Price Plan (RPP) or through an
electricity retailer.

Buying electricity from Enersource

Enersource does not earn a profit on the electricity we purchase on your behalf. You pay the same market cost for electricity that we do.

As our customer, you pay a regulated price per kilowatt hour (kWh) for the electricity you use. This price is set by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB). It remains the same over the summer and winter seasons.

Buying from an electricity retailer

Retailers buy large 'blocks' of wholesale electricity from power generators and then sell it to consumers. You then pay the retailer the 'fixed-price per kilowatt hour' that you agreed on when you signed the contract with the retailer. The price may be guaranteed for a specified number of years, but it can change during the contract period.

Before you sign a contract with an electricity retailer

• Make sure the retailer is licensed by the Ontario Energy Board to sell electricity by checking the OEB website.
• Compare their prices to our current regulated prices.
• Carefully read the contract so you understand all the terms and conditions.
• Ask questions about anything you don't understand, such as:
  • What are the administration costs?
  • Can you end the contract? How does that work?
  • Can you decide whether or not to renew the contract?
  • Will the contract be renewed automatically or will you receive a reminder before it expires?
