Understanding your bill

Electricity is essential to making your business run, and understanding your bill is an important part of running your business. Have a look at the sample bill below, where we ve circled a few items and explained what they are.

Account Number   Your Enersource account number is unique to your business. Use this number when you pay your bill, if you use online or phone banking, or any time you have a question about your account. When paying online or by phone, you ll need only the first 10 digits of the number.

Meter Number   You ll find this number on your electricity meter. Your meter will be located either outside along the wall or in the basement of your business. If you re a landlord, you may manage multiple meters in an apartment building. If you are part of a condominium corporation, you may want to know about the Smart Suite Metering Program.

Statement Date  
This is the date your statement was printed.

Amount Due  
This is the amount you currently owe.

Due Date   Your payment is required by this date.

Amount Paid  
This is where you fill in the amount of your payment.

Your Electricity Charges   This is a breakdown of the charges on your energy bill, starting with the cost of electricity and the charges that Enersource collects and passes on directly to electricity suppliers.

If you buy electricity from an electricity retailer instead of Enersource, the prices you pay will be different and will be listed in the contract you signed with the retailer.

Your pricing also will depend on whether you pay Non-Regulated Price Plan rates. our rates or Regulated Price Plan (RPP) rates.

NON-REGULATED PRICE PLAN

For businesses that use more than 250,000 kWh per year

SSS rate (Standard Service Supply) — non-interval meter

Per kWh

WAHSP (Weighted Average Hourly Spot Price) — This is calculated in accordance with the Retail Settlement Code, which determines how energy distributors like Enersource work with energy retailers to provide service. To learn more, see the entire code.

Spot market price — This is the pricing established by the Independent Electricity Service Operator (IESO) according to market supply and demand across Ontario.

Administration charge

Prices are based on a 12-month forecast.

Global Adjustment   
The Global Adjustment (GA) makes up for differences in spot market prices set by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and the rates paid to regulated and contracted generators.  Previously referred to as the "Provincial Benefit", it can be either a positive or negative number depending pricing fluctuations that result from changing supply and demand. It applies to businesses that use more than 250,000 kWh of electricity per year, as well as residential customers who purchase from energy retailers.

Delivery   
Delivery is the cost of bringing electricity from generating stations to your business. It includes the Customer Charge, Distribution Charge and Transmission Charge. The table below shows you how your delivery charge depends on the size of your business.

Customer Charge  
The Customer Charge is based on fixed costs (such as meter costs and administration) and does not change with your consumption. This charge includes meter reading and billing.

Distribution Charge  
This helps pay for the system and services that deliver electricity to your business. The amount of your distribution charge will depend on whether you are an RPP or non-RPP customer.

Transmission Charge
and Transmission Network Charge   These charges cover the cost of sending electricity from power generators to Enersource.

Regulatory Charges  
Regulatory charges, which include the Special Purpose Charge, help maintain Ontario s power grid and pay for conservation and renewable-energy programs. Enersource passes these charges directly to the province s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) — the IESO balances the flow of electricity across the province.

Wholesale Market Service Charge  
This covers costs related to market regulation and system management.

Debt Retirement Charge   This helps lower the debt of the former Ontario Hydro.

Compare your daily usage  
You can use this graph to compare your energy use from month to month.

Your Total Electricity Charges   This is the total of the electricity charges on your bill.  

H.S.T.  
The HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) is 13%.

Amount of last bill  
This tells you the amount that was owing on your previous bill.

Payment Received  
This is the payment you made after you received your previous bill.

Balance Forward  
This is the amount still owing from your previous bill. It has been added to your new bill.

Total Amount Due by...  
This gives you the total of your bill and when payment is due.

Your electricity usage  
These numbers are the readings from your meter. Enersource uses them to calculate your bill.
