Earth Hour
Earth Hour 2011 happened on March 26, between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Earth Hour is a global initiative where cities and communities turn out their lights
to symbolize their commitment to finding solutions and raising awareness for climate
change. Since its inception in 2007 the event has grown into an internationally
recognized event that raises awareness of climate change and energy conservation.
Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia - 2.2 million homes and businesses turned
off their lights for one hour. In 2010, a record 128 countries and territories
joined the global display of climate action. People across the world from
all walks of life turned off their lights and came together in celebration and contemplation
of the one thing we all have in common - our planet.
The goal for Earth Hour 2011 is to spread the "Beyond the Hour" messaging, encouraging
participants to think about how their lifestyle decisions affect the environment
throughout the year. Visit www.earthhour.org

Some great ideas submitted by residents:
I will be spending my earth hour indoors reading by candle
light and remembering a time before electricity, when candles were precious commodities
used for very specific purposes.
It's my birthday, so I'll be celebrating with my fiancé
and some friends over a candlelit drinks & dinner!

As an Average Joe/Jane, we're really limited to what we can to do to drastically
change the world. We can't fix all of the problems we've caused to our planet overnight,
but we can turn the lights off & unplug the power bars before leaving the house
every day. Every little bit counts. And spreading that message is just as important.
I'll be having neighbours over to enjoy great conversation, some snacks and refreshments.
Spending time together with no distractions always ends up being a lot of fun!
