Windows, insulation and weatherstripping
About half your energy bill goes to heating and cooling your home. Proper insulation and weatherstripping will
help keep the heat and cool air in, making your home more comfortable and quiet, and lowering energy costs by
up to 10%.
Windows
Up to a third of the heat in your home could be going out the windows. You can prevent warm and cool air by escaping with:
- Energy-efficient windows
- Storm windows — you can also cover single-glazed windows with plastic sheeting
- Windows with low-e coating or argon fill
- Proper weatherstripping around windows
Insulation and weatherstripping
The right insulation also has a big impact on your home's energy efficiency. To improve insulation:
- Use insulated exterior doors, not hollow ones
- Caulk to seal gaps and holes between doorframes and walls, around non-opening windows, and around electrical outlets, water pipes and vents
- Use weatherstripping to seal door openings and windows
- Insulate floors, walls, crawlspaces, basements and attics
- Use a dehumidifier to maintain the right humidity level
- Make sure your ventilation system works properly, and use a dehumidifier to keep your home's humidity
at the right level
- Seal and insulate your ductwork
- If you have a fireplace, keep the damper closed when not in use. And installing glass doors or a fireplace insert will make it more efficient by keeping keep warm air in and cold air out
