Enersource Hydro Mississauga offers top energy conservation tips
(Mississauga, ON) – As temperatures drop, Enersource Hydro Mississauga (EHM) is offering easy, effective tips to help Mississauga residents manage their energy use and save money this winter.
"We tend to think about energy conservation during the spring and summer months but there are ways to be energy conscious year-round," said Dan Pastoric, Executive Vice President and COO of Enersource Hydro Mississauga. "By taking advantage of simple, cost-effective green tips, consumers can help the environment and their bottom line."
Enersource Hydro Mississauga’s top energy-saving tips for the winter months include:
1. Only use energy when you need it! Install a programmable, digital thermostat and keep it at a lower temperature when you’re not home or sleeping. The peaksaver® program offers consumers a free, touch-screen thermostat and $25 rebate. For more information, or to sign up visit www.enersource.com/conservation or call 1-866-323-0206.
2. Cut down on ‘phantom’ power costs. Items that are plugged in, even when not turned on, can use up to 50 watts of power. Electronic devices with LED light displays tend to use the most ‘phantom’ power. To save energy throughout the year, unplug these devices when you’re not using them or use a power bar to stop the flow of electricity.
3. Get rid of your older, second fridge which may be costing you up to an additional $200 in electricity costs per year. Take advantage of the Great Refrigerator Roundup which will pick up old fridges and freezers for free. Find more details at www.enersouce.com/conservation or call 1-877-797-9473.
4. If you know your house is drafty, seal up the cracks and holes that let cold, drafty air in. Caulking and weatherstripping are cheap, effective ways to save energy but should not be used in homes with inadequate ventilation.
5. Weather-proof your windows to avoid heat loss. Use plastic window film or removable caulking on windows you don’t open during the winter months. Open curtains during the day to let the sun in, and close them at night to keep the heat in. Also, heavy curtains with insulated liners that fall to the floor can help maintain heat indoors.
