Net Metering

Net Metering imageWhat is Net Metering?

Net Metering is a practice that allows a customer who generates their own power from a renewable source to connect their generation system to the electrical grid and receive a credit for any excess electricity they export to it. A recently passed regulation in Ontario ensures that all Ontarians have access to net metering.

Why is Net Metering important?

Net Metering allows consumers to reduce the amount of electricity they purchase from Ontario’s electricity grid. It also encourages the production of clean, renewable power.

How does the credit I receive for sending excess power to the electricity grid benefit me?

The excess electricity that is provided to the grid for credit means you can draw on this credit to offset charges when your system can’t supply your electricity needs. This reduces the need for expensive backup generators or battery systems and still allows you to draw power from the grid when your power supply is insufficient.

How does Net Metering work?

The meter keeps track of the amount of electricity that is sent from your power supply to the electrical grid and what you withdraw from the grid when your power supply is not sufficient. You are billed by Enersource for the net difference between the charges for electricity consumed and the credits for electricity supplied to the grid.

On my electricity bill, what charges are affected with Net Metering?

Net Metering applies to both the electricity energy charge and the associated consumption based regulated charges on your bill. If you are able to produce a good amount of generation, you could lower your bill enough so that you only pay your fixed monthly customer charge.

Who can use Net Metering?

Net Metering is an option for any consumer who can generate any portion of their electricity needs through wind, water, solar or agricultural biomass. A homeowner with solar panels, a farmer who can use agricultural waste to generate electricity, or a business with a small wind turbine could all benefit.

The new regulation ensures that all consumers have equal access and requires distributors to permit Net Metering for eligible projects up to 500 kilowatts.
