Customer Notice: How Will the HST Impact Your Electricity Bill?

WANT TO KNOW HOW THE HST WILL IMPACT YOUR ELECTRICITY BILL?

Enersource wants to make sure you have all the facts about Ontario’s new Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) when it comes to your electricity bill! Below are some quick facts to help you stay informed:

What is the HST?

The Ontario government is replacing the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) with a new tax that is combined with the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) to create one, single ‘harmonized’ tax (the HST).

The provincial portion of the HST is 8% while the federal portion remains 5%, for a combined rate of 13%.  The HST takes effect in Ontario on July 1, 2010.

How will this impact my electricity bill?

The HST will apply to all charges on a customer’s electricity bill including distribution, transmission and regulatory fees.  Charges from July 1, onwards will be subject to the HST.

When will the HST first appear on my bill?

The first bill a customer receives after July 1 will show a line item for both the GST and the HST.  Charges will be pro-rated based on the consumption period.  GST will be applied to charges before July 1.  Charges that occur after July 1 will have the HST only applied to them.  Customers will see the full effect of the HST on their bills beginning this fall

Where can I learn more?

The implementation of HST is a provincial government initiative. You can learn more at the Ontario Ministry of Revenue website at www.rev.gov.on.ca or call Ontario’s HST hotline at 1 800 337-7222.
