Don't Forget to Call First, Dig Later

Enersource Hydro Mississauga urges customers to call before they dig

Did you know there could be underground electricity cables and other wires underneath your property that could be damaged if you dig in the wrong spot?

“As the weather  warms up ,  we all look to do outdoor projects  around our homes , which is why Enersource is reminding residents to always put safety first, and ‘Call Before You Dig,’” says Dan Pastoric, Executive Vice President and COO, Enersource Hydro Mississauga.

As part of Ontario’s first official “Dig Safe Month” Enersource wants to make sure its customers are aware of Ontario One Call, a free 24-hour service offered seven days a week. The initiative invites homeowners or contractors to call first before they do any work that involves digging. This will help to prevent injuries, property damage and inconvenient outages.  In addition, damaging underground services can be expensive to repair, and can lead to legal action.

Customers wishing to take advantage of Ontario One Call can call 1-800-400-2255 or visit www.on1call.com to request a cable locate at least one week before digging.  They will need to be able tell the operator: who is digging; when and where they will be digging; the type of work being done; and the method of digging.

“Ensuring safety and protecting vital services is everyone’s responsibility,” said Pastoric, “Before you dig, drill, auger or drive stakes into the ground, step one is to locate all utility services underneath.”
