Searching for Solar Solutions

Enersource partners with Peel Region, Toronto Pearson through Partners in Project Green solar study

It isn’t always easy being green, but a coalition of local organizations are working together to do just that.

Today, Enersource Hydro Mississauga (EHM) announced that it is partnering with the Region of Peel and Toronto Pearson International Airport to launch a rooftop solar research initiative.

"Ontario’s Green Energy Act enables new opportunities in the renewable energy market. However, there are still barriers facing the adoption of new technologies, such as rooftop solar projects in the commercial and industrial sectors," said Dan Pastoric, Partners in Project Green (PPG) Steering Committee Member and Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer of Enersource Hydro Mississauga.

Added Pastoric, "As the local electricity distribution company, we feel that Enersource has a role to play in facilitating renewable energy projects within Mississauga."

This study is part of a move by local businesses through the PPG initiative. Created in 2008, PPG is working together with businesses to ‘green’ their bottom line and create an internationally-recognized Pearson Eco-Business Zone in the industrial areas surrounding the airport.

"This project will help us identify barriers surrounding the use of rooftop solar and develop solutions that minimize the risks for local businesses interested in pursuing ‘green’ opportunities," said Chris Rickett, Senior Project Manager with PPG.

As part of the initiative, researchers will look at local, national and international case studies for similar installations, conduct one-on-one interviews with various industry and government stakeholders and host a stakeholder workshop with more than 50 participants from five different areas.

Recommendations from the study are expected to be available by the end of the year.
