Before You Dig

Before You Dig, Think Safety First, and Contact Ontario One Call at 1-800-400-2255

Enersource Hydro Mississauga urges residents and contractors to use Ontario One Call when planning any digging on their property, to keep everyone safe.

As the weather gets warmer and we begin to work on and around our homes, it’s important to keep safety in mind. Never assume you know the location or depth of buried cables. If you plan to build a fence, have a pool installed, or complete other landscaping projects, step one is to locate all utility services underneath.

It is the law to have utilities located before you dig under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. This means that before you dig, drill, auger or drive stakes into the ground, you must have had your underground cables located by contacting Ontario One Call.

Ontario One Call is a non-profit organization supported by Enersource Hydro Mississauga and other utilities to help homeowners easily locate any underground services. Contact the organization in one of two ways: by phone at 1-800-400-2255 or via the internet at http://www.on1call.com. You will be required to provide necessary information about your excavation plans and then Ontario One Call will go to work for you, notifying a wide variety of member utilities with underground facilities in your area.

There is no charge to homeowners for this service. If member utilities do have any buried network on your property, they will locate and mark their facilities before you dig. The process, from call to completion, generally takes one week. Not only does Ontario One Call help to ensure personal safety, it helps to cut down loss of hydro, telephone, or gas service in your area, prevents those around you from unnecessary danger, and avoids legal actions and hefty restoration costs. This summer simply plan ahead; and think safety first. Contact Ontario One Call before you dig!

Equally important to thinking about what lies below a work project is to consider your position in relation to overhead lines.  If you are trimming a tree, painting a home or working at any height near hydro wires, always consider where a branch may land or ladder might fall. If you have any doubt at all about the safety of your situation please contact Enersource Hydro Mississauga first.
